How to supplement kids’ school learning

In this article we’ll discuss three strategies for supplementing what your child is learning at school.
These strategies are: expanding on the school curriculum, exposing the child to a wider range of learning opportunities and staying ahead of the curve. Learning strategies can be used to improve the performance of a child who is having difficulties or when the parents just want to give their child an advantage over their classmates.

Build on the school curriculum

By expanding the topics children are learning at school parents can help make schoolwork come alive and help maintain their child’s interest. This can be achieved by relating their school work to richer real world experiences like visits to museums, historical sites and the like. It might mean providing extended resources related to school curricula: books, websites and other learning materials where the child can indulge their curiosity and read further. This gives them the chance to extend their interest in a topic and helps them to better grasp the subject matter at school.

Encourage kids to further their own intellectual curiosity

When we expose children to learning opportunities outside those they have at school we prepare them for career options and opportunities other children don’t have. This means providing resources unrelated to school curricula. Having a wide range of books and electronic learning materials available lets a child find their own way to what interests them. If done early this can help parents identify childrens’ aptitudes and interests and allow them to tailor their education more effectively. No one wants to have a college age child who has no idea of what to do with their life. LOL!! EP1K F4ILZ!!!! Avoid this fast road to failure by identifying your child’s interests early on.

Stay ahead of the curve

Today we live in a global world where our children will compete for knowledge jobs with graduates from all over the world. Just being average isn’t good enough anymore. That’s why parents all over the world are turning to private after school education to improve their kids’ academic achievement. Subject matter at these types of schools is generally two or three years ahead of the standard school curriculum. Under these circumstances students have no problem with academic performance and develop a much stronger understanding of what it means to succeed through hard work and perseverance. To implement this type of strategy means thinking hard about the best mix of afterschool education, private tutoring and tailored subject matter. The results however can be spectacular.

Each of these methods can yield excellent results, especially when they are combined in an education strategy specifically tailored to your childs’ needs and development stage. One thing that the global education boom is teaching us is that it is no longer enough to sit by and hope that state schools will provide a good education. When your child is preparing to compete against the best of the best from around the world it’s best to take matters in hand early, not just wait and hope he or she just just miraculaously becomes brilliant with no special stimulus.

Discuss School With Your Child

Showing enthusiasm about what your child has learned at school can be a great way to send the message that school is fun and interesting. Children form attitudes based on vocabulary they hear in relation to things. When they hear words like ‘fun, ‘interesting, ‘ exciting’ or ‘special’ used to describe school activities it can really help them to shape healthy attitudes to school life.

Try not to focus on their test scores. Instead ask what they learned. Even if their scores aren’t that great a child inevitably learns something at school. They are gaining new understandings, developing their abilities and improving skills. By focusing on these aspects you show your child that school has a purpose besides getting good grades. Putting their achievements in their own words helps children retain their new knowledge and abilities.

By developing these attitudes early we give a child an understanding of why they are studying. This can lead to better performance in later schooling, especially in the teen years when motivation for school and learning drops. In fact many teenagers complain that learning is pointless and not worth wasting time on. Avoid this outcome by getting in early and showing enthusiasm over the results of learning: what they have learned, not just what test scores they have achieved.
